In his new bookHard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman, Jamie Reidy makes the rounds of finding his way on the internet as a salesman for a pharmaceutical company.
When he meets up with his new boss, a marketing executive from Pfizer, a doctor from San Diego, he is not exactly the kind of guy a salesman should be. But it's a different story.
Jamie, who's been working in the pharmaceutical industry for almost three decades, is introduced to Reidy in a few months. He begins to wonder if he's ever done this before—or could it be that he's just plain crazy?
"He's just the most incredible guy I've ever met," he says. "He's a guy who's never been anywhere else."
Reidy says he's got a lot of great advice from his friends, who've been with him for quite a while now. He's also the kind of guy who can't take no for an answer, which is a big no. But the idea of a Viagra salesman comes with a lot of baggage, one of which is that he's never been there.
"I'm a big fan of Viagra," he says. "But you just have to give it time."
With a reputation as one of the most successful men on the planet, Pfizer is looking for ways to improve its sales force. It's a perfect fit with its marketing strategy.

In the book, Reidy explains why it's important that pharmaceutical companies keep marketing their products. "They're going to keep doing the right things. And they're going to do it in a way that works, and it's going to be the best thing that happened to the company, and it's going to be the best thing that happened to the company, and that's what I'm saying about the book."
In the book, Reidy also reveals the history of Viagra sales. He says the drug was originally developed by Pfizer for treating erectile dysfunction. It came about because Pfizer wanted to be the first to make the drug, and it's thought that the drug was going to be effective for many years. Pfizer was also developing a treatment called generic sildenafil, which was originally developed for the treatment of angina. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1998.
"This drug was developed and patented in the United States for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, which was approved by the FDA," he says. "The FDA approved generic sildenafil in 2000, and the patent on the drug expired in 2012, so it's now generic sildenafil.
"Then the pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, which was also a pioneer in the development of generic sildenafil, put generic sildenafil in its name and got into the same field."
The drug became Pfizer's top-selling drug, with sales of $1.6 billion in 2018. Pfizer has said it has a long history of success, and Reidy says Pfizer has a lot of success in the market. "It's a great marketing machine, and I think it's a great marketing machine," he says.
